Catching up with Porsche Cooper

It's been a while since I checked in with makeup artist, Porsche Cooper (see my story on her here) but I knew via Instagram, etc., that she's been moving ahead full force. Aside from being extremely motivated and talented, she is kind and charismatic - someone you wish only the best for. I asked Porsche to fill me in on what she's been up to lately. The magazine tear above (from May 2013 Harper's Bazaar) proves her recent success. The other colored images are extra takes from a shoot in which Porsche styled the make-up (photo cred: Jamie Beck & Kevin Burg). Here are 10 other things you should know about Porsche now...

What have you been up to lately? Any fun projects?

I've been a part of a myriad of projects lately. Last week, I was on set for a music video, a photo shoot, a TV appearance, and I also did makeup for three of my fashionable clients going to galas and parties in the city. A recent shoot I did for a luxury book publisher was just printed in L'Uomo Vogue, which I'm very excited about. I also shot a video featuring Kelly Framel of The Glamourai for the launch of L'Oreal Professionnel True Grip [click to watch]. A few weeks prior I was in Houston for NBA All-Star painting faces for some of the wives and relatives of the players.

What are some of the beauty products you're currently loving?

I am all about the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils from Nars, especially my favorite, Dragon Girl. It can be used as a liner or filled in totally as a lipstick. I am also in love with Sisley-Paris Sun Glow Gel - its a liquid bronzer with golden-copper highlights and it literally melts into the skin to give a believable radiance and tan that only the sun can give you.

What are some important lessons you've learned recently?

That's an awesome question, because after each makeup job, it's good to reflect on how you can improve for the next time. If I know my client is going to be photographed, I take a picture of my client to see how the makeup will photograph. This helps me check for symmetry, shading, and to make sure there is enough contour, blush, lip, etc. Just like any other beauty guru, I am always on the hunt for the "new-new." I love new products...but I tend to revisit techniques from my earlier days of makeup artistry. It takes real skill to layer and mix multiple colors and products to achieve a breathtaking makeup.

What exciting things do you have coming up?

You'll start to see me working on more creative fashion videos in addition to print work. The industry is heading toward moving art, and I will not be left behind! I also am looking forward to an amazing new beauty venture of a client/friend of mine....it will be mind blowing!

Any "star-struck" moments recently?

Not really. I don't get star-struck...I've been around and seen many a celebrity in my day. Give me an opportunity to paint a real legend like Diana Ross, Cher, or Janet Jackson and my heart will skip a beat.

What brands or fashion trends are you into right now?

I love visual stimulation by graphic and colorful tribal prints. I love mixing patterns with blouses and trousers/skirts...I'm really into styling myself everyday. Like every other New Yorker, I am over this winter and ready to start dressing for the warmer months. I have my eye on shoes and clothes with movement {fringe, beading, tassels} that dance as you strut about.

What was the last thing you treated yourself to?

I love my skin care and anti-aging products, so I treat myself to the best in products from Sisley-Paris, La Mer, and skincare products from India and Paris. I also indulge in luxury bath products and bougie parfumee candles from Diptyque Paris.

Favorite places in the city right now for lunch? dinner? drinks? nightlife?

I like to lunch at Pazza Note {means crazy night in Italian}. It's one of my favorite places and my longtime server always takes really good care of me. I love french inspired dinners at Chez Lucienne in Harlem, and enjoy having cocktails in nice hotels around the city.

What were you up to over fashion week?

Fashion week was crazy busy for me. I decided to not do any collections this time around, as I've been a part of about 14 or 15 seasons in NY, and wanted a break. I did three days of press with singer/songwriter/actress Toni Braxton as she made various appearances on shows including Anderson Cooper, Good Morning America, The Today Show, etc. I was also busy around the city painting faces for some of New Yorks notables before they attended shows.

Describe how you feel about life at this very moment in 3 words?

Grateful, optimistic, loving.

  1. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any solutions to help prevent content from being ripped off? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
